SERVICES

All of the work we do revolves around water. Protecting the coastline and protecting communities from the fear of flooding are just two important examples of the work we do, which includes: coastal protection, flood defence, lock and weir refurbishment, dredging and beach nourishment, and habitat creation.

We play an important role in the regeneration, maintenance and renaissance of the UK’s waterways network. Among our workforce we are fortunate to possess a wealth of construction and engineering expertise, as well as mechanical, civil and

electrical engineering skills. The projects we carry out include repairs to 200-year-old locks, bridges, aqueducts, weirs, reservoirs, tunnels, towpaths, embankments and cuttings.

Our whole project life capability covers not only construction but also appraisal, feasibility, design and Early Supplier Engagement services (ESE).

Heres an overview of our main services:

Coastal protection

Water and wind pose a constant threat to the shoreline, jeopardising the natural protection it offers. The work we carry out to replenish beaches and deliver coastal protection schemes is designed to maintain the existing coastline by preventing coastal erosion.

Flood defence

The threat of flooding along the UK’s coasts and rivers is an issue of rising importance and a constant concern for communities based there. We work to develop and deliver innovative construction solutions to enhance quality of life for people who live in fear of flooding - either from the sea or inland waterways.

Lock & wier refurbishment

We play an important role in the regeneration, maintenance and renaissance of the UK’s waterways network. Among our workforce we are fortunate to possess a wealth of heritage construction and engineering expertise, as well as mechanical, civil and electrical engineering skills. The projects we carry out include repairs to 200-year-old locks, bridges, aqueducts, weirs, reservoirs, tunnels, towpaths, embankments and cuttings.

Dredging and beach nourishment

Dredging is Van Oord’s core activity and it is a world leader in this field. We use our dredging solutions to reclaim land from the sea, protect coastal zones, and expand and maintain harbours and waterways.

Habitat creation

Wetland habitat is disappearing across the UK as a result of rising sea levels and the construction of new coastal flood defences. For example, in the Severn Estuary alone between 300 and 600 hectares of wetland habitat need to be created over the next 20 years to compensate for the loss of existing saltmarsh and mudflats. These internationally important habitats provide vital feeding and breeding grounds for wading birds and wildfowl as well as homes for animals such as water voles and Great Crested Newts.
