Team Van Oord’s Dutch partner Van Oord has published a special jubilee magazine to mark the company’s 150th anniversary.
A leading international contractor specialising in dredging, marine engineering, land reclamation and other offshore projects, Van Oord’s roots stretch back to 1868.
The magazine, which is available online, highlights how Van Oord has ‘mastered the elements’ in its efforts to protect communities from flooding and reinforce coastlines.
It also explains how the company’s fleet has evolved from straightforward vessels like fishing boats to innovative floating plants offering the comfort of a ‘cruise ship at sea’.
Looking to the future, the magazine showcases the eight start-ups selected by Van Oord as finalists of its Innovation Challenge.
The challenge aims to help startups in the marine infrastructure and offshore energy sectors – with two winning teams set to work with Van Oord in 2019 on their proposed solutions.
The magazine also features a wide-ranging interview with Christiana Figueres, the United Nations’ top climate change diplomat who delivered the Paris Agreement on Climate in 2015.
In his introduction, Pieter van Oord, CEO of Van Oord, said:
“We trace our roots back to 1868.
“It is remarkable that some challenges of the past, such as protecting communities against water and reinforcing coastlines, are just as relevant today.
“Together with 4,500 Van Oord professionals, I’m prepared to take on the challenge of climate change. By offering various land reclamation and coastal protection programmes.
“And by acting as a sparring partner for the authorities in many different countries in their battle against flooding. This way we build a better world for future generations.”
